Configuring Unsubscribe Flows (One-Step, Two-Step, Dynamic)
Unsubscribe flows control what happens after a contact clicks an unsubscribe link in an email. You can configure One-Step, Two-Step, and Dynamic flows to control how quickly an unsubscribe is completed and when confirmation is required.
What You’ll Learn

Learn how One-Step, Two-Step, and Dynamic unsubscribe flows work, how to configure the account-level setting, and how Dynamic determines when confirmation is required.

1

What Are Unsubscribe Flows?

Unsubscribe flows determine what happens after a recipient clicks an unsubscribe link. Depending on the selected flow, the contact may be unsubscribed immediately or required to complete a confirmation step.

2

Unsubscribe Flow Options

Each flow determines when an unsubscribe is completed and whether confirmation is required.

One-Step Flow

The contact is unsubscribed immediately after clicking the unsubscribe link. They can then provide optional feedback.

Two-Step Flow

The contact must complete a confirmation step before the unsubscribe is finalized.

Dynamic Flow

Dynamic combines One-Step and Two-Step behavior. The unsubscribe is immediate unless the contact clicks the unsubscribe link within 5 minutes of email delivery or the contact record is less than 1 hour old. In either case, confirmation is required.

How to Configure an Unsubscribe Flow

  2. Click the Settingsgear icon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will changing the unsubscribe flow affect contacts who already unsubscribed?
No. Existing unsubscribe data is not changed. The updated flow applies to emails sent after the setting is changed.
Q: What happens if a contact starts the Two-Step flow but does not confirm?
The unsubscribe is not completed until the contact finishes the confirmation step.
Q: How can I test the Dynamic flow?
Send an email to a test contact and click the unsubscribe link within 5 minutes of delivery, or test with a contact created less than 1 hour ago. In either case, the Dynamic flow should require confirmation instead of immediately unsubscribing the contact.
Q: Does the selected flow apply to all emails in the account?
Yes. The unsubscribe flow is an account-level setting and remains in effect until you change it.
Q: Can a contact resubscribe after unsubscribing?
Yes. After unsubscribing, contacts can use the unsubscribe feedback questionnaire to select Unsubscribed by mistake, subscribe again and submit the form. Their email subscription status is then restored.
